EPoSS is an industry-driven policy initiative, defining R&D and innovation needs as well as policy requirements related to Smart Systems Integration and integrated Micro- and Nanosystems. EPoSS is contributing to EUROPE 2020, the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade, to become a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy.
EPoSS provides a common European approach on Innovative Smart Systems Integration from research to production, defines priorities for common research and innovation in the future, formulates commonly agreed road maps for action, provides a Strategic Research Agenda, mobilises public and private resources, and supports its members in coordinating their joint research efforts and improving communication amongst the members as well as towards the European Commission.
There is a clear link between real and digital artefacts, and Smart Systems are enabling developments in multi dimensional, context-aware, and smart environments.
The Future Internet will result from a synergic merge of today’s computer networks with the Internet of Services (IoS), the Internet of Things (IoT) into a common global IT platform, and the Mobile Internet, connecting every device at any time anywhere.
Among those components, this working group has its main focus on the technologies linked to the communications for the Internet of Things. There is no standard definition for the IoT, albeit the one advocated by EPoSS has been cited in several occasions. EPoSS defines the "Internet of Things" as “a world-wide network of uniquely addressable interconnected objects, based on standard communication protocols”.
The vision of this Working group is to develop a sustainable Strategic Research Agenda and to federate different actors in the Smart System world, developing synergistic activities within the EU frameworks and beyond.
